As Home Secretary Theresa May authorised a £1 million payment of taxpayers money to a man who used the cash to fight for ISIS

“I ACCEPT HIS POINT ABOUT CONFIDENTIALITY BUT CAN I ASK HIM A SIMPLE QUESTION? WHAT WAS THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS IN MAKING THESE PAYMENTS? WHICH MINISTERS AGREED TO THOSE PAYMENTS?

“DID THE MEMBER FOR MAIDENHEAD, WHO IS THE CURRENT PRIME MINISTER AND WAS HOME SECRETARY, AGREE TO THESE PAYMENTS? OR IS THAT COVERED BY THE CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT?”

When it comes to condoning or even supporting terrorism, the Conservatives have form. In the past they have supported the terrorism of state actors, like General Pinochet in Chile*. They have also taken a £7 million election contribution from the ISIS funding Saudi Arabian royal family.

However, giving public money to someone because we never should have sent to Guantanamo Bay in the first place, letting them go to Syria to join the conflict we started in the region by illegally invading Iraq, then claiming we can’t explain why he was essentially allowed to use British Tax Payers money to join a terrorist organisation because of “legal constraints” is a nonsense.

Chris Bryant certainly isn’t buying it – because the House of Commons is protected from all such censure & members can speak of these matters freely, by law. The Tories just don’t want to, because it means they have to admit that Theresa May just literally used taxpayers money to fund terrorism.

The money was paid out as compensation after al-Harith was held in Guantanamo Bay from 2002 to 2004. He was allowed to return to the UK after the British government, led by Tony Blair at the time, called for his release.

A payment was made once the Conservatives were in power and Mrs May was Home Secretary, after al-Harith launched legal action claiming MI6 was complicit in his mistreatment by the Americans. Although the Justice Department was responsible for the payment, it raises questions about whether she approved it.

We now know for sure that sending people to Guantanamo Bay’s illegal prison camp created or encouraged terrorism. Where’s that headline?

“BASICALLY, THERESA MAY, WHEN SHE WAS HOME SECRETARY, AGREED £1 MILLION OR THEREABOUTS FOR A MAN WHO WENT ON TO COMMIT A SIGNIFICANT TERRORIST ACT THAT KILLED MANY PEOPLE.”
